Baptism then becomes a sign to us of God’s covenant into which we have entered. So the value of the mark of baptism for the church is that in our strayings, our doubts, our ignorance, we look upon the mark to be reminded of the covenant in which we live, and be encouraged to persevere in freedom from sin in the newness of life. In baptism, we are reminded that sin and the new life are contrary to each other.
