The Consequences of Bypassing Faith (Genesis 16:1-16)

The Consequences of Bypassing Faith (Genesis 16:1-16)

Here’s the narrative background. God promised a son to Abram and Sarai. Not just a son, descendants as numerous as the stars of the sky and the sand of the ocean’s beaches. This promise was first given to Abram when he was a pagan, living in his father’s land of Haran, unknowing of the Lord Most High.

Throughout the narrative of the past four chapters, a history covering at least 10 years, this promise has been affirmed on at least three occasions, and yet remains unfulfilled. 10 years sounds like enough time for God to get his act together and bring his promises to fruition. But 10 years have passed and no indication of fulfillment, other than God’s affirmation of the promises, has appeared.

It is in this sort of moment that faith is revealed. It is in this sort of moment, 10 years in, that you will be tempted to bypass faith, and alleviate your pain of unfulfilled promises. It is in this moment that you will be tempted to question beyond your paygrade and seek to know what cannot be understood. It is in this moment that you will want to be as the sovereign of the universe and declare to God what ought to be done. It is in moments like this that you’ll want to give to God a helping hand.
