The Master of Time (Ecclesiastes 3:1-15)

The Master of Time (Ecclesiastes 3:1-15)

This is the third sermon in the series on Ecclesiastes.

Introduction: It’s not a book preached often. Many question why it’s even in the Bible. When it begins “meaningless, meaningless, everything is meaningless” we have a hard time understanding what the book is teaching us. But, the Preacher of Ecclesiastes is considering life without God. Without a Savior, Jesus Christ, life is meaningless, vanity. It’s emptiness. There’s no substance. It’s nothingness. There is no gain on earth, “under the sun” as the Preacher would say. Nothing tangible.

But the Preacher closes with the line “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)

So the truth is that everything matters. And is utterly meaningful. And by being brutally honest about a life that is meaningless, hopeless, confounding, confusing without Christ, it compels us to comprehend how truly magnificent the Almighty God is. The preacher is more intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually honest that we often are. Often, we don’t really want to the admit the cold, hard truth about the sin and brokenness in life and what we see every day, even in our own souls. Because perhaps if we are truly honest, perhaps we’ll find that we’ve created a false life meaning for ourselves. One that is devoid of real hope. One that is only a shadow of the real thing, but lacking the substance.

In our series, “A Glimmer of Hope,” we are recovering the substance of Jesus Christ that we might be in awe of Him and find deep, true, lasting hope.
