Exhortations to a Faithful End (1 Peter 5:1-11)

Exhortations to a Faithful End (1 Peter 5:1-11)

We have two sermons left in 1 Peter. As he nears the end of his letter, Peter has brought into focus the impending judgment of God; a judgment which is beginning in God’s own house. As such, God’s people are exhorted to persevere in suffering, entrusting their lives to God, and doing good. Being righteous.

1 Peter 4:17-19 For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?  18 And “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”  19 Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

This is the culmination of a theme widely spread throughout the scriptures.

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.  14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

Because God will bring everything to judgment, live your life as though such a statement is true.

Understanding this, Peter then gives some final words for his readers. Since this is the coming end, live in light of such a coming end. To begin, these final words bring into the prominence the importance of pastoral work in preparing people for judgment.
