Because God is With Us, Part 2 (Genesis 26:17-35)

…The very day Isaac makes peace with his enemies, the well springs forth water, showing God’s bountiful provision to Isaac in the context of peace. It’s one thing to have a well when your enemies quarrel over it. It’s another to have a well in a land of famine while at formal, certified, authentic peace with one’s enemies.

And this is a work of the Lord.

Proverbs 16:7 When a man’s ways please the LORD, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.

I love the word “even.” It communicates the extent of the Lord’s peace. It’s not just that the Lord makes peace between rivals, it’s that the Lord grants peace to those who please him, even to the extent of one’s enemies. Peace begins between a righteous person and God, but it extends out. To the congregation of the righteous, those who please him. But even further. To one’s enemies. And if a person is at peace with his enemies, then he is at peace.
