Ambassadors in Exile (1 Peter 1:1-2)

God’s people often find themselves on the outside of pagan and antagonistic cultures. How do Christians and the church respond? Some fight back in anger and fear. Other attempts to change culture through political clout. Others withdraw from society. And others assimilate into society and lose their peculiar distinction as Christians. In 1 Peter, the apostle calls on the church to remain faithful to Jesus. To live as God’s witnesses in society. This is the purpose for which God’s people have been chosen. As such, we should remember our identity as ambassadors in exile. Our citizenship is in heaven. But we have been scattered about this world to declare the good news of repentance and forgiveness of sins in the name of Jesus and to demonstrate with our actions in love and mercy that this gospel is true.
