…And when Jesus said they would see him coming on the clouds of heaven, he referred to Daniel 7:13-14. Let’s see what else God says about his son in Daniel 7:13-14.
Daniel 7:13-14 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
Surely the religious authorities knew these verses by heart. They knew that the one God sent would rule as king over the Kingdom of God. And Jesus is the one. Jesus would go from the one on trial to the one exalted as King over the kingdom of God with all dominion, glory, and power.
These religious authorities think they have Jesus on trial. But the only reason Jesus is on trial, is because God ordained such a thing to pass. Jesus could have rained down fire from heaven. Called upon angelic chariots. Or just disappeared. But he stood trial to fulfill God’s plans. And in the midst of this tremendous persecution, Jesus made the good confession. He didn’t fade away. He didn’t fumble his words. He simply confessed that he was the Lord and Christ, the Son of God.
God sent his son to this world that the world would behold him.
Here he is to behold, in all his glory. When we look at Christ in this moment, God doesn’t want us to see a frail helpless man, falsely accused, but to behold Jesus as the Son of God and Son of Man, the king, the Lord, and to make our own good confession, that Jesus is Lord and Christ, the Son of God. And to live by that confession. This is the Christian confession.
