April 12, Sunday Service of Worship (Mark 13:1-13, The Sign of the Times)

…Well, the end is near. That much is sure. How near? That much is unsure. God’s people have been expecting the end since the beginning. Even Eve, when she gave birth to Cain, then Abel, then Seth, seems to have expected that one of these sons might be the promised seed who would crush the head of the serpent. There was an eager expectation among the first generation of believers following the ascension of Christ, that Jesus would return in their lifetime. And yet, here we are 2000 years after the ascension, several more thousand after Cain, Abel, and Seth.

One thing we can be certain of is that the hour of our great salvation is nearer to us than when we first believed.

So, what shall we do? What is the Christian conduct becoming the end? Are we to sit up on our rooftops with telescopes in hand searching the heavens for signs that will tell the day and the hour? Though I’m guessing my kids are wanting to ask me if they can go up on the roof. Searching for the sign of the times seems to be a preoccupation in certain circles. But what is the right response to the end? Well, all that and more, when you tune in to Mark 13:1-13.
