A Good Shepherd Finds His Sheep (Luke 15:1-10)

Jesus is the Good Shepherd who comes to seek and save that which has been lost. He is the promised Messiah. The one who promised in Ezekiel 34 that he, himself, would come to search for his sheep. Ezekiel 34:11, 16 “For thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out…16 I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and the fat and the strong I will destroy; I will feed them in justice.” The sheep were not able to save themselves. Sheep go astray. Once astray, they do not return home. But God has come as the Shepherd to save what is lost. And when he finds what has been lost, there is rejoicing. God exults and rejoices over sinners who are found by God. Zephaniah 3:17 “The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”

This is what Christmas is about. The Incarnation is God come to save his people. This is good news. This means that Christmas is for everyone. Christmas is for the lost, the broken, the strayed, the weak, the injured, the destitute, the hopeless, the helpless. It is for sinners, lost in their sin, turned astray to their own desires. Christmas is especially those who might hate it the most.
